About the event
Join Professor Stefan Reif in conversation with Ian Gamse (one of his former graduate students) as they explore some of the key themes of Stefan's recently published memoirs.
The book is "the tale of how a boy of working-class, immigrant Jewish parents in Edinburgh became a Cambridge scholar of international repute." Stefan and Ian will discuss the following questions and much more:
- Why did Stefan write his life story?
- How does it relate to the history of Jewish migration in the 20th century?
- Is the book about scholarship, or personalities?
- What was it like studying at Jews’ College in “the swinging sixties”?
- What support and/or opposition did Stefan have from Cambridge colleagues when he made ambitious plans for the Genizah?
- What does Stefan remember about the “Jacobs Affair”?
- Does Cambridge ever change and how does it compare to other universities?
- Would Stefan encourage bright, contemporary students to enter academia as their career of choice?
